Male Breast Reduction: What You Need to Know

Breast procedures have long been associated with women. Really, breasts themselves have largely been associated with women! Even today, many people do not think of men as having breasts. Understandably, this would be because the breast tissue on a man is much different than the breast tissue on the female body. At least it usually is. Gynecomastia is another story.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the medical term for male breasts. Keep in mind. All men have breast tissue. Some men, however, experience an overgrowth of this tissue. When a man’s breast tissue grows, it can make the nipple area look puffy. In extreme cases, a man can develop what looks like female breasts.

There are several reasons why gynecomastia may develop. There may be a genetic component, and there is almost always hormonal influence. Male breasts may occur when there is too much estrogen in the blood. Where there is more estrogen, there is less testosterone, and there is more breast tissue.

How Male Breast Reduction Helps

It is much more difficult to regain control over hormone levels than it is to attack the physical problem of gynecomastia. If puffiness or volume does not decrease naturally (which they might after puberty), a man may consider male breast reduction. This surgical procedure may involve one or more techniques to achieve an ideal outcome:

  • Liposuction can extract fatty tissue.
  • Glandular excision may be needed to remove the overactive breast gland.
  • A breast “lift” may be necessary to tighten loose, droopy skin.

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men who are in good general health and have reached stable body weight. During our consultation, we discuss the capabilities and limitations of the procedure and what to expect in terms of incisions and scarring. Through open, honest discussion, patients should have no lingering questions about what to expect.

The benefits of male breast reduction span both the physical and the psychological realms. Men feel more comfortable and confident with their bodies after excess breast tissue is removed. They feel at peace, as well, knowing their new shape can be maintained indefinitely.
