Most of the initial swelling after a facelift lasts for a few weeks, but smaller amounts of swelling can come and go for several months. You’ll generally notice the biggest changes early in recovery, followed by gradual improvement as the tissues settle.
With more than 25 years of surgical experience, Dr. Robert H. Hunsaker provides care at Cosmetique Cosmetic Surgery Center in Miami, FL. He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and has conducted research involving advanced facelifting techniques.
What Happens During the First Few Weeks?
Swelling and bruising are expected because facelift surgery involves raising and repositioning facial tissues. Your face might also feel tight at first, and temporary numbness may occur, particularly around the incisions.
The first several days tend to bring the most noticeable swelling and discomfort. From there, you should see gradual improvement. Sleep with your head elevated for at least the first week and avoid sleeping on your face. Cold compresses may also help with swelling and bruising during early recovery.
Many people return to work around three weeks, though your timeline might differ.
Why Can Swelling Return Months Later?
Healing doesn’t happen in a perfectly straight line. Your face can look less swollen in the morning and slightly puffier by evening, especially during the first few months.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that anything has gone wrong. The tissues need time to adapt after they’ve been lifted and repositioned. Residual swelling may fluctuate and become more noticeable in the evening for several months following facelift surgery.
How Can You Manage Swelling During Recovery?
Rest and following your postoperative instructions closely are important during the early weeks. Keeping your head elevated helps limit swelling, and you’ll need to avoid activities that sharply increase blood pressure in your face.
You can start light walking within the first few days, but heavy lifting, weight training, and strenuous exercise should wait. Dr. Hunsaker generally allows light cardio around four weeks and a return to more strenuous exercise around six weeks, depending on how you’re healing.
When Will You See Your Final Facelift Results?
Your face will continue changing long after the initial swelling subsides. Full facelift results are often visible at about six months, while complete healing can take as long as one year.
