Age may be “just a number” these days, but that doesn’t mean we go gently into our unique aging process. For years, men and women have protested and resisted aging in whatever way was available at the moment. Today, we have a myriad of ways to postpone and correct the signs of aging. An interesting thing about aesthetic medicine is that age does play a role in the complaints patients tend to present to their plastic surgeon. Here, we break it down by age group.
Children and Teens
Plastic surgery is not commonly performed on children and teens, except in two situations. One is deformity of the nose that causes breathing problems, and the other is ear protrusion. Ear pinning, or otoplasty, is actually most successful and less complex when conducted during early childhood. The ears may be one of the only parts of the body that matures before adulthood, so an earlier surgery to reposition the ears is ideal.
Twenties
Much of the time, it is during our twenties when we feel the most satisfied with our physical appearance. There are no lines or wrinkles to speak of at this point, and weight may be relatively stable. What plastic surgeons often treat in twenty-something patients are noses and breasts. In our Miami practice, we help women gain the curves they want using breast augmentation and lift procedures. We help men correct gynecomastia with male breast reduction. Rhinoplasty is a meticulous procedure through which we help patients refine the shape of their nose.
Thirties
The living that has been enjoyed during the decade of the twenties tends to show up between age 30 and 40. In this decade, men and women may begin to notice a little extra fat in certain places. Women who have had children may be struggling to regain muscle tone and may wish to reshape their breasts after breastfeeding. Customizing treatment to each patient, we can plan liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast enhancement, and fillers to address the different concerns that develop.
Forty-Plus
It is difficult to ignore facial aging after age forty. The loss of collagen leaves muscles unsupported, and the fat that has added contours to the midface may drop to the jawline, causing the appearance of jowls. Eyelids may become heavy, and undereye bags may worsen. Dermal fillers and Botox are excellent resources for any adult, but the signs of aging may become concerning enough during the forties and fifties to warrant more attention. Facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid rejuvenation are among the most popular procedures for men and women in the forty-and-up age group.
