Surgery of the breast is performed to enhance the size or shape of a women's breast for cosmetic, medical or reconstructive reasons.
The "M.I.A.M.I." (Minimal Incision And Minimal Inconvenience) Breast Augmentation
The M.I.A.M.I. Breast Augmentation is an approach to periareolar submuscular breast enlargement surgery developed by Dr. Hunsaker that predictably allows:
- A rapid return to normal activities of daily living
- Full range of motion of the arms by the next day
- A light anesthetic allowing a comfortable procedure with a rapid recovery and miniscule risk of nausea/vomiting and
- A relatively inconspicuous scar
The procedure takes approximately ninety minutes. Our infection rate for breast implants is ZERO (no infections in fourteen years). Our rate of capsular contracture requiring surgical revision is less than 1%. Our deflation (leak) rate over the past seven years is less than 1% (one implant). Published rates for infection run as high as 1-2%, for capsular contracture as high as 30% and for deflation as high as .5-2% per year. In the last two-and-a-half years over 96% of our breast augmentation patients have stopped needing any prescription pain medicine by the end of the third day and nearly 50% stop by the end of the second day. Some use only Tylenol or Motrin for all there post-procedure needs. For most patients this has allowed them to plan their surgery as a "long-weekend" commitment to recovery. While every patient responds differently, and not every patient is a candidate for this approach, this method offers many advantages over more traditional approaches that require prolonged rerstrictions, recovery and pain.
The following is a list of several procedures we perform on the breasts. Clicking on a procedure will take you to a brief description of the surgery, and what parts of the body are affected:

Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a very popular procedure for women and among the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. A saline-filled implant is inserted under the crease in the breast, around the nipple or through the armpit. The implant can be placed under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. After surgery, breasts will appear "fuller" and more shapely in contour. Incision scars will fade or disappear over time.
In certain unique instances silicon implants can be used.

Breast Lift (Mastoplexy)
Over time, the effects of gravity along with the loss of the skin's natural elasticity begins to have an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts. These factors, combined with pregnancies and nursing will often cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness.
A breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Breast implants inserted in conjunction with a mastopexy procedure can increase both firmness and size.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)
Large, pendulous breasts may cause a woman to potentially experience various medical problems caused by the excessive weight of the breast tissue. Problems with posture, skeletal deformities, back and neck pain, skin irritations and breathing problems are common with this condition. Bra straps often leave indentations in the shoulder area. Many women, especially teenage girls, are very self-conscious if they have unusually large breasts.
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes fat, glandular tissue, and excessive skin, resulting in smaller, lighter and firmer breasts that are better-shaped in proportion to rest of the body.

Breast Reconstruction
Reconstruction of the breast after a mastectomy due to cancer or other disease is quite possible with today's surgical procedures. The procedure is often covered by many HMO's after breast cancer surgery and legislation is currently before Congress to enact mandatory coverage. Using the newest medical techniques, a plastic surgeon is often able to create a breast that is similar in form and appearance to that of the natural breast. A consultation will provide you with information on the many available options for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Correction of Enlarged Male Breasts
Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts is a common condition. Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. There is no known cause for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or medical conditions.
Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast-reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a contoured chest that is flatter and firmer.
